What is Cancer?

Each cell in the human body undergoes controlled division and it is known as cell cycle regulation. The disturbances in this process induce rapid proliferation of cells and cell undergoes carcinogenesis, oncogenesis or tumerigenesis.

Cancer is the disease associated with the abnormal growth of cells. Cancer can arise anywhere in the body and can influence people from all age groups. It is the leading cause of mortality in the world.

Types of Cancer

There are several major types of cancers:

  • Bladder Cancer
    It is the common type of cancer affecting men more frequently than women. It is the cancer that begins in the urothelial cells (cell line inside of the bladder). Bladder is the hollow, muscular organ present in lower abdomen and it stores the urine. Bladder cancers at an early stage are highly treatable.
  • Blood Cancer
    It is type of cancer that affects the normal production and function of blood cells due to production of abnormal cells. This type of cancer starts in bone marrow which is the site for blood cell production. Blood cancer is of three types as Leukemia, Lymphoma & Myleoma.
  • Brain Cancer
    Brain cancers arise from the cells present in the brain. In brain cancer patient shows the headache, nausea, and vomiting like symptoms. There are various treatments are available for brain cancer such as brain surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy.
  • Brain Tumor
    Brain tumors are abnormal growth of brain cells. Patients having brain tumors commonly have headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Brain tumors are classified as benign and malignant.
  • Breast Cancer
    It is the most common type of cancer in women develops in the breast tissue. The patient shows the various signs like lump in the breast, changes in size, shape of the breast, and much more.
  • Cervical Cancer
    It is the type of cancer arises in the cervix due to abnormal growth of cells. The patients show various symptoms like vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, or pain during sexual intercourse at later stage. The women infected from HPV have high chances to develop cervical cancer.
  • Colon Cancer
    It is the cancer of the large intestine (colon). Colon is the final organ of digestive tract. In majority of the cases, colon cancer develops as small, noncancerous (benign) clumps of tissue (adenomatous polyps).
    Colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer in men and women. The treatment varies with the cancer location, size and severity also on the health of the patient.
  • Kidney Cancer
    It is also called as renal cancer and in this kidney cells become cancerous (malignant) and grow in uncontrolled manner and forms a tumor. Kidney cancers mainly develop in the renal tubule and the renal pelvis. Old age, obesity, high blood pressure increases the risk of developing kidney cancer.
  • Liver Cancer
    The liver cancer starts in the liver and they develop outside the liver and spread to the other area. The patient suffering from liver cancer has less survival chances. Surgery and liver transplant is only the treatment for liver cancer.
  • Lung Cancer
    The lung cancer is known as lung carcinoma and it is malignant type of tumor formed in the tissues of the lung. It is the major cause of death in both men and women. Lung cancers are of two types as small-cell lung carcinoma and non-small-cell lung carcinoma.
  • Mouth Cancer
    These type of cancers develop anywhere in the mouth, i.e., on mouth surface, tongue, the lips, inner side of the chick, in the gums or on the rood or floor of the mouth. The oral cancer develops after the age of 40.
  • Ovarian Cancer
    The uncontrolled growth of cells in the ovary is referred as ovarian cancer. It is the 10th major cause of cancer deaths in women. Ovarian cancer develops in the epithelium, or outer lining of the ovary.
  • Pancreatic Cancer
    This type of cancer develops in the pancreatic tissues. Pancreas secretes digestive enzymes and hormones. This type of cancer spreads to nearby organs. The treatment for pancreatic cancer includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or combination of all.
  • Prostate Cancer
    This type of cancer affects the prostate gland. It is the gland that produces semen and also controls urine production in men. Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men and treatable if detected in early stages.
  • Stomach Cancer
    It is also known as gastric cancer. The stomach cancer formed as result of abnormal cell growth in part of stomach. It is the 5th most common type of cancer across the globe.
  • Uterine Cancer or womb cancer
    In this type of cancer, the uterine cells grow abnormally and build up cancer. The actual cause of uterine cancer is not known.
  • Causes of Cancer

    Cancer is caused by genetic mutations or caused by exposure to cancer causing agents. These agents are known as carcinogens. Here are the following causes of cancer:

    • Environmental agents
    • Viruses
    • Biological or internal factors like age, gender, inherited diseases, and skin type
    • Exposure to UV radiations, asbestos
    • Poor lifestyle

    Identification of Cancer

    Cancer screening tests are designed to detect the presence of cancer in healthy patient. Following are the cancer screening tests

    • Colonoscopy- detects the colon cancer
    • Mammography- used for detection of breast cancer
    • Pap smear – Used for detection of cervical cancer
    • MRI – Detection of breast cancer in women
    • Tumour Markers-Present in blood

    Available treatments for Cancer

    • Hormone Therapy: The treatment slows or stops the growth of various cancer. It is useful in patients who are not able to have surgery or radiation therapy.
